Project summary

The aim of the project is to provide a formal model of Polish inflection that enables representation of changes in Polish inflection over the span of the history of Polish.

The model should account for changes of inflectional system as a whole as well as changes of individual lexemes. Examples of such phenomena are the evolution of the case forms of some classes of nominal lexemes or the evolution of whole grammatical categories. The latter could be exemplified by the disappearance of dual number, forming of masculine personal gender and shifts of nouns from one gender to another or verbs from one conjugation to another. The model can be used in prospective electronic historical dictionaries of Polish describing inflectional structure of a language of a certain period. Moreover, the model will be general enough to provide a platform for presentation of the Polish inflectional system in a prospective diachronic dictionary. The proposed model needs to be formal, i.e., rigorous enough to be used for automatic natural language processing. Therefore any form in an inflectional paradigm needs to be described in terms of a precise computer algorithm. The model will be verified by implementing a basic infrastructure for inflectional analysis of historical texts. A morphological analyzer, a tagger and a tool for creating and developing inflectional dictionaries will be created. The latter will serve as a lexical and grammatical basis for the analyzer and the tagger.
